Prevention
Flood control dykes are ranked as first, second or third level priority. The latter are the so-called summer-dykes.
In the Directorate’s operational area, 1st rank flood control dykes protect more than 30 thousand people of 30 villages. On the right bank of the Danube – we always understand left and right side according to the direction of the flow – from the border to Mohács, there are 19,9 kilometers and on the left side of the Drava, from the border to Tótújfalu, together with Pécsi-víz, there are 87,4 kilometers of dykes. These dykes and dams in case of Danube protect the levee district of Mohács, and in case of Drava, they protect the levee districts of Drávaszabolcs, Kémes and Ormánság. The size of these levee districts in case of the Danube is 53, and along the Drava it is almost 300 square kilometers. These are what we call flood-prevented areas, in which 34 villages can be found.
The length of the second-rank dykes which are called localization dams in DDKÖVIZIG’s operational area does not reach 20 kilometers (18,5), while rank three dykes are only 5,2 kilometers long.
We can talk about a sound sense of safety along Danube, since the flood-prevention infrastructure has already been copmpleted by the South-Transdanubian Environmental and Water Directorate. The last phase in the development of the dyke system was the reconstruction of the wall protecting the city of Mohács in 1992.
This cannot be said about the dyke system along Drava. The building of the protection system is not integrated; its state and functioning vary between wide limits. Due to the developments of recent periods the tops of some dykes have been raised under Drávasztára, and on some parts of Fekete- and Pécsi-víz above the standard flood level with 60 centimeters. However, the relevant decree states that the dykes along Drava should be of 1,2 meters height above the standard flood-level, so the existing dyke tops have to be raised with another 60 centimeters in the mentioned river sections. You can find more information about the Directorate’s ongoing Drava projects under the Projects/Baranya link.

Levee district and pumping station:
There are three drainage-water prevention sections in the operational area of the Directorate. Along Dráva, the area of these is 155, along Danube, it is 53,1, and at Balaton, it is 7 square kilometers. These levee districts are protected by so-called stabile pumping stations, these also have a names according to their locations. Respectively, they are Lanka, with a capacity of 3 cubic meters of water per second, Béda with 1,7 cubic meters per second and Balatonlelle with 2 cubic meters per second.
The Directorate has a protection plan for its flood protection dykes and drainage protection districts.
The Directorate is responsible also for the organization of flood-, hail-, drainage-, water quality and local water damage prevention, for the preparation, effectuation and documentation of the protection, and for the running of the professional services these require.
